Nasal Hygiene Protocol with Mouth Taping

Nasal Hygiene Protocol with Mouth Taping

June 2, 2024

This Nasal Hygiene Protocol can be very helpful for you or your loved one to get a refreshing night sleep because it helps open up the nasal passages enough to get increased and more comfortable airflow through the sinuses. This encourages nasal breathing and is a great adjunctive routine along with Mouth Taping.

Simply follow these instructions BEFORE BED or any time of the day to breathe easier through your nose:

  • Take a Steamy Shower to loosen up dry, hard mucous in the nostrils and sinuses
  • Additionally, OR INSTEAD OF a shower, you can use Xlear Nasal Spray
  • Blow your nose as thoroughly as possible (do whatever you need to do to clear the nose of debris)
  • Use Xlear Nasal Spray again
  • Blow your nose again as thoroughly as possible
  • Use a Breathe-Right Strip on the bridge of your nose as directed on the  package
  • Additionally, Dr. Azouz recommends using Nasal Dilators (a.k.a. Nose Cones) at the same time as the Breathe-Right Strips
  • Before bed, apply Mouth Tape each night (Dr. Azouz recommends the variety we carry at the office, but there are other brands available as well)

If you find that it is still very difficult to breathe through your nose, Dr. Azouz recommends using Flonase for up to 2 weeks ONLY to get the nasal passages open and more comfortable to breathe easily. Generally, he would not recommend corticosteroids for a patient, but in extreme cases, Flonase may be very effective at reducing inflammation and allergic symptoms that may be causing obstruction of the sinus passages.

Here is some supportive information if you are interested:

Xlear Nasal Spray is all-natural and comes in adult and child packaging options. It  contains only Purified Water, Xylitol, Saline and Grapefruit Seed Extract. These ingredients are known to have antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral[1] properties and have been studied to improve chronic rhinosinusitis[2].

Breathe-Right Strips effectively open the nostrils near the bridge of the nose allowing exponentially more volume of airflow through the nasal passage.

Nasal Dilators help open the lower area of the nostrils. Dr. Azouz recommends the brand Mute, which come in various sizes to fit your needs.

Mouth Tape helps to gently keep the lips sealed closed throughout the night to encourage consistent nasal breathing which is very important to overall health. See our “Mouth Taping” blog for more information on this. Dr. Azouz carries in the office the most biocompatible mouth tape available called PAP MD Mouth Tape.
