Have you heard about the amazing advantages of PRF?
What is PRF (PRF)?
PRF is the acronym for Platelet Rich Fibrin.
PRF, in short, is a 100% natural concentrate of the stem cells, growth factors and platelets that we are able to capture from your own blood and place into surgical sites in your mouth which can produce the following benefits:
- Accelerate healing of the soft and hard tissue after extractions and dental implants 50 times faster than other conventional methods[1].
- Eliminate risks of allergic or immunologic rejection of this material.
- Protect the site from saliva, bacteria and other oral cavity contaminants.
- Decrease the risk of infection.
- Decrease pain and swelling[2] after surgery.
- Decrease bleeding at the surgical site.
- Decrease the chances of getting a dry socket after an extraction.
- Improve bone grafting success.
- Improve bone strength in surgical extraction sites.
- Improve osseointegration of zirconia dental implants leading to improved stability and faster loading time.
As a certified biological dentist, Darryl Todd Azouz, DDS, AIAOMT has seen great healing results when routinely using PRF in these procedures:
- Tooth extractions
- Placement of zirconia implants
- Cavitation removal (bone pathology a.k.a. osteonecrosis)

How is PRF made?
- This wonder substance is 100% natural and 100% organic because it is made from a few vials of your own blood which we draw right before the oral surgery procedure.
- Once your blood is drawn from your arm by our resident phlebotomist, the PRF is very easily made in our Citrus Heights office while you are getting comfortably numb for your oral surgery procedure.
- The additive and preservative-free vials of your blood are spun in a centrifuge which then separates your blood into 3 layers – plasma, PRF and red blood cells.
- The PRF is a yellow, thick, jello-like layer that is removed from the vial and held in a sterile tray until it is ready for use.
What other ways do we use PRF?
An article in The Journal of Advanced Oral Research stated, “The results presently documented are overwhelming; the potential to use PRF and PRP in the clinical dentistry have improved dental quality, satisfaction, and clinical outcome.[3]”
PRF is an adaptable platelet extract that is known for its natural healing potential, is a simple process to acquire and prepare and has shown great results in the healing and immune support of our patients.
This fibrin clot can be used as a fibrin plug or a biological membrane. It can also be combined with bone grafting material to create an easily adaptable and manipulatable material called “sticky bone”[4].
As a biological holistic dentist, Darryl Todd Azouz, DDS, AIAOMT is proud to offer his patients a minimally invasive, 100% all-natural, 100% hypoallergenic accelerated healing approach that fortifies the bone strength after oral surgery procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Platelet-rich fibrin, or PRF, is a material prepared from a small sample of a patient’s own blood. It is processed in a way that concentrates platelets and growth factors that naturally support healing. In dentistry, PRF may be used alongside certain procedures to help support tissue recovery. It is not a medication and does not replace standard dental treatment.
PRF may be used to support the body’s natural healing response after procedures that involve bone or gum tissue. Because it comes from the patient’s own blood, it is often chosen as a biocompatible option. Dentists decide whether PRF is appropriate based on the type of procedure and the patient’s overall oral health.
When prepared and used properly, PRF is considered safe because it is derived from the patient’s own blood. Dentists follow strict protocols for handling and preparation. Patients are informed about why PRF is being considered and how it fits into their treatment plan before it is used.
Patients typically do not feel the PRF itself. Any sensations experienced are related to the dental procedure, not the PRF material. Some patients may notice smoother healing, but responses vary. Your local dentist will explain what to expect during recovery and how PRF supports the overall treatment process.
No. PRF is only used when it may provide added support for healing. Many dental treatments do not require it at all. Your dentist will recommend PRF only when it aligns with your specific procedure and treatment goals.
