What Is CBCT Dental Scan? Why Would a Dentist Use CBCT Technology?
What is a Cone Beam X-ray?
A Dental Cone Beam X-ray, also known as CBCT (cone beam computed tomography), produces a 3 dimensional model of the structures inside of the face, mouth, jaws, teeth, sinuses and throat.
CBCT technology plays a crucial role in planning and performing successful dental surgeries every day at Airway Sleep & TMJ Solutions because Dr. Azouz can confidently “see inside” the jaw bones and interact with the data images! Using high tech software, he can cut a tooth in half to peer inside or measure the distance from your wisdom tooth root to the very important nerve nearby.
This extraordinary diagnostic machine can accurately present precise anatomic structures that help Dr. Azouz evaluate many dental issues that were previously illusive on 2 dimensional x-rays, including:
- Cavitations
- Wisdom tooth position in relation to the nerve in the jaw
- Infected teeth that don’t show up on a 2D x-ray
- Severity of an infection or disease in the teeth or jaws
- TMJ joint health or damage
- Sinus & Jaw location for dental implants
- And so much more!
Advantages:
- FOV (Field of View) which is the projected column of radiation can be modified to the specific size and area we are trying to capture, thereby reducing the size of irradiation and unnecessary exposure to the patient
- Image accuracy down to the sub-millimeter measurement
- Rapid scan time decreases artifacts and distortion caused by patient movement
- Vivid detail of structures
- Low radiation exposure compared to medical CT scans
