Judge Rules that Fluoridated Water is an Unreasonable Risk

November 1, 2024

80 years ago, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the first Americans underwent an experiment1 by the U.S. Public Health Service – they got fluoride added to their drinking water. The trial was supposedly initiated to prove the cavity-fighting effects of fluoride.

According to the CDC’s website as of December 2022,2 of all the United States population that is served by Community Water Systems (CWS), 72% receive fluoridated water (whether naturally occurring in or intentionally added to the water). California ranks 37th in the United States regarding the amount of the population being served fluoridated water. Washington D.C. ranks 1st at 100% of their population being supplied fluoridated water, while Kentucky comes in 2nd and Minnesota 3rd.3

The debate between pro-fluoridation and anti-fluoridation of public drinking water has been going on since 1949 when Alexander Y. Wallace denounced fluoride as a poison. More recently, in 2006, a report by the National Research Council (NRC),4 ironically located in Washington DC, identified a number of health risks associated with fluoride exposure that may impact nearly every part of the body. A large portion of the studies proved evidence of a negative impact on the development of cognitive functions, especially citing lowered IQ scores in children. Alarmingly, some noteworthy words repeatedly used in the National Toxicology Program’s (NTP) report were, “Significant association between urinary fluoride and IQ score.” Furthermore, one of the Summary Of Findings stated, “The results from 18 of the 19 high-quality (low risk-of-bias) studies that evaluated IQ in children provide consistent evidence that higher fluoride exposure is associated with lower IQ scores”5. Studies have also shown increased rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)6 with increased fluoride exposure.

These health risks may increase even more due to the fact that humans are regularly exposed to multiple sources of fluoride hidden in various forms such as non-stick (Teflon) cookware, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, fertilizers, food, air, dental care products and dental office materials. This is very important for people to be aware of especially since those that are even more impacted by fluoride exposure are pre-born7, infants, children, and people with diabetes, thyroid or renal problems.8

Thankfully, after comprehensive scientific evidence behind fluoride exposure being linked to lower IQ and it’s damaging effect on cognitive development was presented and reviewed, a recent U.S. District Court ruling by Judge Edward Chen recognized that fluoridated drinking water comprises an “unreasonable risk” and is asking the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take further action.9

Dr. Azouz at Sacramento Natural Dentistry in Citrus Heights supports your choice in not exposing you and your family to fluoride at the dental office, therefore, he chooses products that do not contain fluoride. Many patients don’t realize that just refusing the fluoride treatment after their dental cleaning likely is not preventing them from fluoride exposure since it was probably in the polishing paste the hygienist just polished their teeth with. It can also be unsuspectedly hidden in other dental office products such as crown build-up materials, crown cements, palliative fillings and preventative varnishes.

Dr. Azouz is committed to helping you keep your holistic health as unadulterated as possible by choosing fluoride-free dental materials.

If you would like to learn more about the reasons the biological dental community opposes the use of fluoride, then we invite you to take a look at this article by fluoridealert.org for more information: https://fluoridealert.org/wp-content/uploads/50-reasons.pdf

Are you wondering what Dr. Azouz recommends to support great oral health and prevent cavities?

Look no further than hydroxyapatite (HAp) toothpaste that studies have confirmed to be equal to fluoride at preventing cavities as well as remineralizing initial cavities.10 Hydroxyapatite is the same mineral your bones and teeth are comprised of, which makes it safe and non-toxic. Thankfully, you can find a wide variety of options on the market today.

If you have any questions or would like to meet Dr. Azouz on a video consultation call to see if our holistic biological dental office is right for you, we would love to be of service to you and your entire family. Give us a call at 916-961-2020 to make an appointment today!
